The Center for Cognitive and Behavior Therapy (CCBH) offers Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in Westport, CT for a range of cognitive and behavioral issues.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a specialized, mindfulness-based cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy designed to help children, adolescents, adults, and families more effectively regulate their behaviors and emotions.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has an overarching goal of enhancing quality of life, and has demonstrated success in the following problem areas:
- Impulsive behaviors
- Emotional ups and downs
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Anger
- Addictions
- Eating disorders
- Self-harm
- Suicidal thinking
- Relationship or family conflict
- Borderline personality features
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), in combination with high risk behaviors
Each member of the CCBH Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) treatment team is “Intensively Trained,” meaning we have undergone the highest level of training offered by Behavioral Tech, LLC: DBT-founder Marsha Linehan’s training and research institute.
After a thorough assessment to determine whether Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is the recommended course of treatment, our team works closely with each patient or family to create and implement an individualized treatment plan.
In keeping with the research, our DBT Program offers the following four modes of treatment:
- Weekly individual therapy (45 minutes, 1-2 times per week): the patient and therapist use a Diary Card to guide sessions and track progress toward collaboratively determined goals, and to help patients bring mindfulness to thoughts, emotions, urges, and behaviors on a daily basis.
- Group Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills Classes (90 minutes, once per week): known as the “backbone” of the DBT model, these skills classes are dynamic learning environments facilitated by two licensed DBT therapists. Groups for adolescents ages 13-20 are “multi-family” groups, meaning one or both caregivers participate weekly and learn skills alongside their teens.
- Phone coaching: clients and parents have access to the individual (DBT) therapist between sessions for in-the-moment skills coaching; this improves skills generalization, shortens the overall duration of treatment, and increases its efficacy.
- Our team meets for a weekly Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Consultation Team (patients do not participate in this mode of treatment), ensuring the program remains adherent to the DBT model and that each of our therapists provides compassionate, patient-centered care.
While engaged in the DBT Program, participants may also be asked to participate in the following modes of treatment: family therapy, parent guidance, and/or medication evaluation or management.
The Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Health (CCBH) provides a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment for people dealing with a range of mental, emotional, and behavioral difficulties.
